About the Speaker - Gary Young, PhD

Gary Young, 61, grew up in on a small farm in Smithville, TN, not far from Nashville.  The first person in his family to go to college, he earned degrees from Tennessee Technological University and Clemson University in agriculture economics.  He has a doctorate in economics from Louisiana Tech University.

He taught economics at community college and university levels before becoming dean of the school of business administration at the UT-Martin campus.  In 2000, he became dean of business at Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tenn., a liberal-arts college affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention.  In Tennessee, he served on community economic-development boards and would like to do so again in Montana.

December 2006 he started as dean of the College of Business (COB) and Professor of Economics at Montana State University Billings.  After working in rural communities with populations 10,000 or fewer, Young enjoys overseeing a business program in a larger city.  "I was wowed by the city and university and the people," Young said.  He wanted to "finish strong" by wrapping up his academic career tackling the opportunities and challenges at MSU-Billings.  Young is intrigued by the close relationship between the college and local business, particularly through case studies done by students and faculty.  Summer of 2007 found him teaching children business principles in camps held on campus.  He has developed and implemented a five year plan for the Center for Business Enterprise.  He has mapped out a timeline and made progress toward accreditation.  Fund raising has resulted in a soon to be opened state of the art Management Information Systems laboratory in the COB.
